And the West is History

100 years ago: The following appeared in the section titled High School Notes: “After the Christmas holidays, Superintendent Smiley will start a college algebra class for all those who wish to join. So far only three have handed in their names for the class.”

75 years ago: “Durango merchants are busy preparing for the ‘blackout’ this Friday night when the lights in downtown Durango will be turned off for a time, and then turned on simultaneously with the street Christmas lighting to make a fine display.”

50 years ago: “Fred W. Kroeger who died Nov. 17 at 85 was honored by the trustees of the Durango Public Library for his great generosity and interest to that institution. The library will spend $25 to purchase books in his memory.”

25 years ago: “District Court Judge Al Haas said he will decide whether to kick Val-Dal Enterprises off the Van-Dal Landfill and allow La Plata County to take over operations. The county filed a request for the preliminary injunction Nov. 10. Haas’ decision today will come only 26 days before the county’s contract with Van-Dal expires on Dec. 31.”
