75 years ago: “Fire of unknown origins completely razed the two-story frame residence on the Harold Carter ranch in the upper Animas Valley. So far had the flames advanced when discovered that nothing could be done to save the house and its contents.”
50 years ago: “Two fires started by the narrow gauge train on its way to Silverton were reported ‘pretty well under control this morning.’ One fire is at the Cascade siding, the other between No Name and Elk creeks. Each covers the area of about two acres and is on a steep, rocky hillside.”
25 years ago: “A 15-year-old local girl who recently obtained her learner’s permit hit the gas instead of the brake and smacked into a wall and window at the TraveLodge, 150 E. Fifth St. Authorities said the Subaru GL ran into a window over the motel room’s kitchen area. The room belonged to the motel’s night watchman, who wasn’t in the room when the car came through.”
