And the West is History

100 years ago: “A trio of Mancos men who snowshoed to the top of the La Platas a few days ago for the purpose of relocating some claims, found the snow so deep only the tops of trees protruded above the surface in the deep gulches.”

75 years ago: “Parents of children in all Durango schools earnestly requested the City Council to consider the building of municipal tennis courts, which in the winter could be converted into an ice skating rink. The councilmen assured the delegation that they had been thinking favorably of some such project.”

50 years ago: “An almost full house in its best spring clothes enjoyed the first professional opera performance to come to Durango at Miller Junior High auditorium. The occasion was the performance of ‘Madame Butterfly,’ composed by Italy’s master of 19th-century opera Puccini.”

25 years ago: “Downtown Durango has a parking problem, but converting to one-way traffic is not the way to solve it, the Durango Planning Commission voted unanimously. One-way traffic and diagonal parking on Main Avenue would be unsafe, carry unknown costs and provide only a temporary solution to the parking problem, the commissioners said.”
