And the West is History

100 years ago: The following appeared in the section called High School Notes: “The Toltec was given out to the students. The first number is an excellent one and contains some clever stories written by the pupils.”

75 years ago: “Gene Andrews, local garden, lawn and tree expert, says that many Durango people are making a mistake in allowing their lawns and particularly shrubbery to go into the freezing months with a dried out soil. He advises thorough wetting, unless there is plenty of rain within the next week.”

50 years ago: “A glass manufacturing plant will move to Durango and will start construction of a new building within the next three weeks. This new industry will make ornamental glassware in the form of flower vases, fruit bowls, dishes and many other varicolored glass items. The new concern is a branch of the Scott Glass Co. of Fort Smith, Arkansas.”

25 years ago: “With glowing candles in hand, participants in the Flashlight/Candlelight Parade, listen to speakers during a rally at Fifth Street and Main Avenue. Sponsored by Durango High School’s Student-To-Student organization, the parade and rally drew between 200 and 300 people. The parade signaled the start of Red Ribbon Week, a nationwide effort to educate the community about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse.”
