And the West is History

100 years ago: “According to circulars mailed by F.C. Gilbert, manager of the smelter, settlement for silver marketed between Aug. 12 and 19, inclusive, will be made at 56 5-8 cents, a considerable increase over the price of 52 cents, the last quotation before the European war affected the market.”

75 years ago: “Some Durangoites complained because they were kept indoors by the heavy rain. They didn’t stop to think that they couldn’t get very far without it.”

50 years ago: “Early-morning temperatures in the area took a sharp dip this morning – to 33 degrees from Thursday’s low of 50 degrees. John Bryce, 1757 West Second Avenue, says the cucumbers in his garden were found to be frost-nipped.”

25 years ago: “Area government and economic leaders have called for a swift resolution of differences between Durango’s two hospitals. Accusing the hospitals’ directors of ‘foot-dragging,’ the Durango City Council, the La Plata County commissioners and three economic development groups charged the board members to ‘cast aside self-interest and work for a resolution that will advance the public interest.’”
