100 years ago: “Mrs. W.A. Hunter returned from a two-month trip to Oklahoma yesterday. The trip was pleasant except for the last ten days, when the high temperatures went up to 110 degrees and were never below 102. Needless to say, she is glad to have returned home where the highs rarely exceed 90 degrees, and the nights are cool.”
75 years ago: “Lightning hit the Baird residence, and the family all received severe shock. One of the girls had to be carried outside before she revived, and the house cat was killed outright.”
50 YEARS AGO: “Modern 3-room furnished house for rent in Bayfield, all utilities included, $55 per month.”
25 YEARS AGO: “Silverton will lose its biggest employer and taxpayer Aug. 2 when the Sunnyside Mine shuts down. But Silverton’s residents are worried about more than their economic survival ... some fear the town’s strong sense of community and history could fade. The first mining claim near Silverton dates back to 1871.”
