100 years ago: An advertisement read: “Home Café – Now open for business under new management. Regular meals or short orders served in the best of style; clean and comfortable. We cater to ladies and gentlemen and trays sent out. Tables and lunch counter always ready for you. 749 Main Ave.”
75 years ago: “After driving all the way here from Tierra Amarilla, N.M., a ‘merry’ car bringing a man to a Durango hospital for an emergency operation caught fire just one block short of its destination – the Ochsner Hospital. People living near the scene of the fire, at Seventh Street and Fifth Avenue, used a garden hose to extinguish the flames before the arrival of the fire department.”
50 years ago: This appeared in the section called Demon’s Pitchfork: “The elections are over with, and gone with them is the excitement of the campaigns and the tension which accompany an election. The election for student council offices of president, vice president and secretary were held. ... Immediately after the elections, one noticed a great change in the appearance of Durango High School. You could see the walls!!! All of the posters have been taken down.”
25 years ago: “Fort Lewis College will confer degrees to the largest graduating class in the college’s history during the 26th annual commencement. A total of 623 candidates are expected to attend, topping the previous record of 493 graduates in 1988.”
