And the West is History

100 years ago: “Despite the fact that there is still much snow in the parks in the Cave Basin mining district, prospectors and claim hunters are beginning to go into the section. Yesterday a party of six left Bayfield for the new camp and others from that town and from Ignacio are expected to make for the Cave Basin camp today.”

75 years ago: “Only one ticket of candidates has thus far filed the necessary petitions for nomination at the city clerks office, as required before the ticket can be listed on the ballot at the Durango city election to be held April 4, although it is reliably reported that there will be three tickets in the field.”

50 years ago: SILVERTON– “There were nine or 10 inches of new snow on Kendall Mountain but very few skiers. The snowfall kept motorists off the mountain passes.”

25 years ago: “La Plata County will stop operating the VanDal landfill June 1, and the landfill will close unless someone else takes over, the county commissioners have notified the Colorado Department of Health. That ‘someone’ would best be the city of Durango, the commissioners feel. The county owns the landfill site but contracts operations to VanDal Enterprises, Inc. The 10-year contract expires Dec. 31, but an escalation clause has bloated costs to $374,000 a year, paid to VanDal out of joint city/county tax fund.”
