The cornerstone was laid for the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, No. 507, in 1925 at Ninth Street and East Second Avenue. Durango Elks Lodge still uses the same building today, at 901 East Second Ave.
50 years ago: La Plata County Sheriff’s Office received reports of three cases of breaking and entering during the week at the old Bondad store, the Longhorn Lounge in Bayfield and the home of Arnold Amidei in Durango.
25 years ago: A man reported to La Plata County Sheriff’s Office that, while he and a friend were having a party in the 1600 block of County Road 203, some people they didn’t know walked into their house and started a fight. One of the man’s friend was reportedly in the emergency room at Mercy Medical Center after his nose was partially bitten off.
