And the West is History

100 years ago: “That the road from Durango to Oxford, to Ignacio, Tiffany to Allison and then back by Spring Creek into Ignacio and from Ignacio to Bayfield is in excellent condition for auto travel.”

75 years ago: “Durango voters in the second municipal election elected as city councilmen, Nels Newman, Robert McNicholas, John Fankhauser, AJ Andrews, and Earl A. Barker, who ranked high in the order named.”

50 years ago: “Adolph Kuss, coach of the 1964 Winter Olympics United States cross country ski team, has been hired by Fort Lewis College to begin teaching the fall trimester. ... Kuss will coach the Fort Lewis ski team, tennis team, and gymnastics team. He also will teach regular physical education classes.”

25 years ago: “The Official State Vacation Guide is getting mixed reviews from tourism promoters in the Southwest corner of the state. Durango Area Chamber Resort Association officials overall are happy with the magazine, calling it ‘jazzy.’ But officials with the Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute tribes say they are sorely disappointed with the magazine because it virtually ignores the two tribes – the only tribes in the state.”
