And the West is History

The cornerstone was laid for the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, No. 507, in 1925 at Ninth Street and East Second Avenue. Durango Elks Lodge still uses the same building today, at 901 East Second Ave.

100 years ago: The Herr family departed Durango for San Diego, where they would “spend their winters.” The community would miss them, “yet envy them.”

75 years ago: The “buying public of the entire San Juan Basin” took advantage of special bargains on merchandise offered by shops and markets in Durango.

50 years ago: Durango had received 0.90 inches of rain in four days.
