100 years ago: Although area streams were running low during the end of the irrigating season, seasonal rains arrived early to save the summer yield of local crops. A record crop year was even expected for agriculture that received water from the Pine River.
75 years ago: The Durango Elks Lodge No. 507 sponsored a special train ride that took local members and members from other Elks lodges in Colorado on a “goodwill tour” from Durango to Silverton.
50 years ago: Durango Veterans of Foreign Wars representative Archie Ball announced that Joanne Houser, a member of the Turner Coffee Club, was the winner of the Animas River Water Derby, which was a competition to see if people could pinpoint, down to the minute, when the Animas River would hit peak spring runoff. Houser missed the peak, which occurred at 1:43 p.m. June 6, by 17 minutes.
25 years ago: La Plata County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted Animas Fire volunteers with putting out a small forest fire that started near 12164 County Road 250.
