And the West is History

The cornerstone was laid for the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, No. 507, in 1925 at Ninth Street and East Second Avenue. Durango Elks Lodge still uses the same building today, at 901 East Second Ave.

100 years ago: Although area streams were running low during the end of the irrigating season, seasonal rains arrived early to save the summer yield of local crops. A record crop year was even expected for agriculture that received water from the Pine River.

75 years ago: The Durango Elks Lodge No. 507 sponsored a special train ride that took local members and members from other Elks lodges in Colorado on a “goodwill tour” from Durango to Silverton.

50 years ago: Durango Veterans of Foreign Wars representative Archie Ball announced that Joanne Houser, a member of the Turner Coffee Club, was the winner of the Animas River Water Derby, which was a competition to see if people could pinpoint, down to the minute, when the Animas River would hit peak spring runoff. Houser missed the peak, which occurred at 1:43 p.m. June 6, by 17 minutes.

25 years ago: La Plata County Sheriff’s Office deputies assisted Animas Fire volunteers with putting out a small forest fire that started near 12164 County Road 250.
