And the West is History

“Andrea Cusick holds a baby duck and cradles two chicks on her lap in preparation for Easter in this March 1989 photo. Andrea is the daughter of Michael and Rosanne Cusick of Bayfield.”

100 years ago: “Regardless of the summer wearing apparel that has been in evidence on the streets the past week, winter dared to play a return engagement.”

75 years ago: “The big crowd that jam-packed the Smiley High gym generally rated the boys physical education demonstration as the best production to date by the boys department. Especially liked by the crowd were the pyramids, the ladder work, and the antics of the clowns. The entire program was synchronized to music, and the rhythm was amazingly well observed.”

50 years ago: “Linda Phillips, a member of the Durango High School Band, will be one of 175 of the best high school musicians in the state as a member of the All-Colorado High School Band. Colorado State college at Greeley will play host on April 1-2 to the band.”

25 years ago: “A special forces soldier gave up his seat on a military transport plane from Saudi Arabia and missed a homecoming celebration at Ft. Campbell, Ky., so Staff Sgt. John Greefkens could get home to his wife and newborn baby in Durango. He arrived here March 21 after four days’ travel and six hours’ sleep, covered with the sand and dust of the Saudi desert and still wearing his uniform.”
