And the West is History

100 years ago: “A.E. Reece, through B. Glaser, sold his ranch on the Florida Mesa to Isador Tausch, who will operate the property, occupying it at once. The ranch comprises 160 acres, about half of which is in cultivation. Mr. Reece by the deal becomes the owner of a piece of city property including a house, located on Fourth Avenue, formerly owned by Tausch.”

75 years ago: “W.W. Agnew, Denver flyer, turned his plane over on its nose while landing at the Durango airport on Reservoir Hill. Agnew apparently was tipped up by a crosswind, aided possibly as a wheel touched a slight ridge in the field. Agnew escaped injury.”

50 years ago: “Mrs. Bus Gardenswartz phoned from Denver to say that her daughter, Judy Scott, will appear on the early part of the Johnny Carson show.”

25 years ago: “Internationally known animal trainer Tommy Luchia will be performing shows in association with the Durango Pro Rodeo at the La Plata County Fairgrounds. Luchia, who has been performing at rodeos and special events across the country for the past eight years, trains horses, monkeys, dogs and chickens to perform many tricks and stunts. Luchia is perhaps best known for his ‘cowboy’ monkey Whiplash that he has trained to ride a border collie and herd sheep.”
