And the West is History

100 years ago: “Ed Fiant, mining operator in the Silverton district, left home with a bunch of 23 pack animals brought the day before from Dolores where they were wintered. Fiant says he expects several new leases in the Silverton camp to develop considerable activity this season.”

75 years ago: “Because the tuberculin clinic is to be held next week, it was necessary to postpone the giving of typhoid inoculations until the week following.”

50 years ago: “Residents will have what the Durango Ministerial Alliance calls a ‘rare opportunity’ to hear Princess Caradja from Romania, it was announced. The main topic will be ‘The Worth of Freedom.’ The announcement said she would tell of her childhood, experiences in both World Wars, the Nazi occupation and of life behind the Iron Curtain.”

25 years ago: “More skiers visited Purgatory and Wolf Creek this season and ski area officials attribute their successful year to group business. Following a sharp decline in skier counts last year, Purgatory logged a 3 percent increase, almost 10,000 more skier days, this year.”
