And the West is History

100 years ago: Lawrence Nolan left his home “by invitation of his neighbors” after they “used the horsewhip on him freely.” He was in search of law officers who could “come to his rescue.”

75 years ago: Rio Grande railroad crews worked to clear snow from the Silverton branch of the railroad, which hadn’t seen rail traffic in over two weeks since a massive slide covered the tracks.

50 years ago: The Office of Information and History cited Capt. John Hitti of Durango for combat leadership displayed during an assault against North Vietnamese Regulars. It stated, “Capt. Hitti charged through murderous automatic and semi-automatic weapons fire and in a few moments single-handedly neutralized three fortified bunkers, killing at least three communists at extremely close range.”

25 years ago: Two young boys who were “dancing in robes around a bonfire” were found and driven home by police at 3:01 a.m.
