The cornerstone was laid for the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks, No. 507, in 1925 at Ninth Street and East Second Avenue. Durango Elks Lodge still uses the same building today, at 901 East Second Ave.

100 years ago: H.S. Harden from the International Silverware Co. was in Durango to promote his trade.

75 years ago: The Ignacio Chieftain reported that the annual Ignacio Fiesta celebration would be held in August and was expected to be “a huge success.”

50 years ago: The Navajo Trail Gem and Mineral Club sponsored a rock craft and hobby show in Gem Village.

25 years ago: Animal Control officers responded to a string of reports of dead cats and dogs in La Plata County. At first, most of the pet owners thought another dog or something else had killed their cats and dogs, but officers found that they had died from ingesting poison intended to kill prairie dogs.
