100 years ago: “Johnny and Tom Acord were down from their Cave Basin mines to lay in supplies and see how the war is getting on. They report less prospecting and more mining in the Basin.”
75 years ago: “Good news received from Silverton was to the effect that several miners began work today at the Shenandoah-Dives property and that by tomorrow about 100 are expected to be re-employed. The new contract will be signed by both company and union representatives and will be in effect until June 1, 1941.”
50 years ago: “The San Juan National Forest will be the location of one of the conservation camps to be included in the administration’s Job Corps program. Exact location of the camp within the boundaries of the forest has not yet been finally determined. The camp will handle approximately 100 young men.”
25 years ago: “Llamas from around the nation will race through the La Plata Mountains in North American’s first llamathon. The Llamathon Challenge Trek is an 18-mile race beginning at Kennebec Pass at the top of the La Plata Mountains. The course follows wilderness trails with elevations ranging from 9,500 to 12,000 feet.”
