And the West is History

50 years ago: Residents in the Durango area will be offered an opportunity to ZIP Code their mailing lists during October. Acting Postmaster Emil G. Johnson announced today. Letter carriers will deliver “no postage needed” cards to each of the city’s 5,000 residential and rural delivery stops. The cards will have blanks for addresses used most often, but for which individuals do not know the proper ZIP Codes.

25 years ago: About 10 p.m. last night, 30 to 40 Durango High School students, some armed with a stick, knife or bat, walked the length of east Seventh Street to Fanto Park. An alarmed resident of the north Durango neighborhood, who spotted about 15 of the youths, called police. Police reports state the juveniles had gathered at Fanto – an area far from most of their own homes – to confront three members of Durango’s so-called “Southsiders” gang. One “Southsider” told police a boy had held a knife to his throat and yelled, “I’ll shank him.”
