And the West is history

100 years ago: FORT LEWIS MESA – “In connection with this southwestern section we have had a favorable season for soil tillers. The copious rains in the mountains through July have kept the ditches full, so that grain is well filled and second cutting of alfalfa very good.”

75 years ago: “Everybody, their cousins, and their cousins’ cousins from the San Juan Basin and many other portions of Colorado are ready for a rip-roaring time at the Spanish Trails Fiesta.”

50 years ago: “Black clouds opened up and dumped nearly an inch of rain on Durango and loosened mud and rocks on the hillsides. About a mile of the new highway north of Durango received a heavy sludge of gooey mud and rocks as sheets of rain loosened them. ... Bulldozers labored to clear the road.”

25 years ago: The Gaslight Twin, 102 Fifth St., was showing “When Harry Met Sally ...” starring Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan. The billing read: “A new comedy by Rob Reiner. Can two friends sleep together and still love each other in the morning?”
