And the West is History

The following appeared in a March 1964 newspaper: “Clarence Rieke has uncovered the above picture of assassinated President John F. Kennedy taken on Kennedy’s arrival at Fort Lewis College field house while seeking backing for the Democratic presidential nomination in June 1960. The driver of the car is John J. Morrissey Jr., Durango’s earliest Kennedy supporter. On the rear seat are U.S. Sen. Ted. Kennedy and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Byron (Whizer) White (barely visible).”

100 years ago: “D.P. Bell, of Silverton, who expects to work his mining properties in the Animas Forks district this summer was a passenger on the Eastern for Ignacio to obtain a bunch of pack stock that was wintered at the Patrick ranch.”

75 years ago: “La Plata County authorities are holding R.C. Smith salesman in jail pending investigation of his former police record if any. Smith passed a number of bad checks in Durango usually for something over $9. His checks were signed with various names including ‘N.G. Borrower’ – which he said indicated he was no good as a borrower.”

50 years ago: “If your income tax return is in the chute in the Durango post office before 10 p.m. this evening it will bear the cancelation date of April 15, the deadline for filing returns. But later is too late.”

25 years ago: “Passengers boarding planes at the Durango-La Plata County Airport in March increased 14.8 percent over March 1988. This March 10,178 passengers boarded commercial air carriers compared to 8,867 passengers who boarded in March 1988. ... A number of factors contributed to the record numbers in March 1987, including good snow for the ski season.”
