100 years ago: “Mr. Carson is laboring so hard to establish a playground at Brookside. The tramway company has most generously donated the ground and the youngsters are clearing it off.”
75 years Ago: “Fire of unknown origin completely destroyed the four-room house owned by John Schaaf near Marvel. All the contents of the building were burned except a few miscellaneous articles.”
50 years ago: Durango – “A dispute over a pay raise between common laborers and the Southwestern Colorado Contractors Association concerning a new contract had reached no settlement and laborers continued picketing construction projects all over Southern Colorado. In Durango pickets were up at several projects in town and at Fort Lewis College where new dormitories and a science wing are being constructed.”
25 years ago: “If you rang the doorbell at a certain small white house on East Fifth Avenue, you’d be greeted by a golden little dog named Abner, who, once he barked at you, would run to his owner and lay his paw on her knee. In such a way, Esther Winters is summoned to the door. Abner is a Hearing Ear dog. Winters is deaf. The two make a wonderful partnership.”
