And the West is History

100 years ago: “The Durango band will present to the pleasure seeking public a musical comedy ‘Pocahontas.’ They have secured the services of Mrs. J.M. Sulivan as directoress.”

75 years ago: “Local young people with an ambition to occupy responsible positions and accomplish worth while things will be pleased to learn that a copy of ‘I Dare You’ has been obtained by the Herald-Democrat and presented to the local library. It is an inspirational book, written by William H. Danforth founder of the Ralston Purina Company, St. Louis, Mo.”

50 years ago: “There were many happy people at the La Plata County Fair as exhibit and livestock judging and the horse show were coming to an end. Hundreds of trophies and blue ribbons had been awarded and everyone was looking forward to the 4-H livestock sale and the junior rodeo.”

25 years ago: “The La Plata County United Way has never had a winning season. Last year, the organization fell $17,200 below its goal. The year before it came up $23,000 short. But the 1988 campaign is being billed as a comeback year, and volunteers are determined to raise $68,000 for 15 community organizations.”
