And the West is History

100 years ago: “The San Juan Wool Growers’ Association will pay a $100 reward for information leading to the arrest and capture of anyone illegally holding sheep.”

75 YEARS AGO: “The years to come will continue to be perilous ones for the Navajos. Many are now in the service of their nation and others will find employment in national defense projects.”

50 YEARS AGO: “Robert M. Harris, 15, of Cortez was seriously injured Thursday morning when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on East Main Street. He is believed to have suffered at least a fracture of one leg ... and lacerations of the face and body.”

25 YEARS AGO: “Private wildlife researchers Dennis Sizemore and George Fischer are the first of a volunteer team to spend this summer and next searching for grizzly bears in the 4 million acres of the San Juan and Rio Grande National Forests. The last known grizzly bear in Colorado was killed near the Upper Navajo River Basin in the South San Juan Wilderness in 1979.”
