And the West is History

100 years ago: “Joe Boyce, of Silverton, who is looking after the Hercules mine at that place, spent yesterday in the city on smelter business, returning home with a big bouquet of flowers last night on the Silverton train.”

75 years ago: “A wind storm reported as the heaviest in recent years hit Electra Lake, tearing boathouses loose from their mooring and capsizing a small boat out on the lake. The four occupants of the craft successfully made their way to shore, suffering nothing worse than a soaking in the lake’s cold waters.”

50 years ago: The Kiva Theatre was showing “Viva Las Vegas” starring Elvis Presley and Ann-Margret. The billing read, “It’s that ‘Go-Go’ guy and ‘Bye-Bye’ gal!”

25 years ago: “Purgatory’s chief operating officer has been promoted to president and chief executive officer, and a Durango native has been tapped as vice president of marketing and communications. John Ogier takes over for Raymond T. Duncan as president. ... Jack Turner will assume the vice president duties.”
