And the West is History

The HHT Co. published this postcard of the Mancos Hospital, postmarked 1925. The card is part of the Nina Heald Webber Southwest Colorado Collection.

100 years ago: “For the protection of the cattle and sheep of the state, State Veterinary W. W. Yard has followed the proclamation of the governor with a quarantine order by the state board of stock inspection commissioners, forbidding the railroad to ship any cattle into Colorado from any Mississippi or Missouri river points in the areas infected by the foot and mouth disease now troubling the middle western states.”

75 years ago: An advertisement for J.C. Penney Co. read: “Be pretty for your next party! Rayon Moire taffeta dress. $3.98. Do the clothes you wear invite romance? Are they feminine in their appeal? This whispery rayon taffeta is trimmed with baby bows of velveteen, and you could easily wear a hoop under a full skirt! If you picture yourself quaint and demure – you’ll love it!”

50 years ago: “While the number of establishments which will close for Veterans Day is undetermined, a spokesman said that a poll showed that all new car franchised dealers will close their showrooms and shops on that day, Nov. 11.”

25 years ago: “Failing to stop the leasing of La Plata Community Hospital to Brim & Associates Inc. the first time around, the La Plata Medical Society is back with another motion before the court. Donald Rappe, secretary and treasurer of the medical society, filed a motion in District Court claiming the proposed lease is illegal and asking for an injunction to stop it.”
