100 years ago: “‘Balsey’ Kern came in from his ranch – been shaking the sunflower seed off so as to insure a good yield next year. ‘Balsey’ is starting a goat ranch.”
75 years ago: “With the tang of fall in the air, and the beginning of the school term next week, the 1938 football season has rolled around to take its place as the main topic of conversation in the sports world.”
50 years ago: “Paul McKinney, one of the men rescued from the Moab potash mine disaster, is the nephew of Mr. and Mrs. C. B. Skidmore, 231 West 17th St., and the grandson of the late Henry Skidmore of the former contracting firm of Loftus and Skidmore in Durango. McKinney’s home is in Norwood.”
25 years ago: “The riverbank in old Animas City north of 32nd Street is clean and neat, thanks to nine children and Kathy Turner. Earlier this summer Turner invited neighborhood kids to help clean-up the area along the Animas River, primarily at the popular gateway for rafters launching at 33rd Street and the trail north from there about 100 yards.”
