100 years ago: “The county commissioners passed a resolution deciding to ask permission of the state authorities for the killing of rabbits in La Plata County during 1916. Many ranchers have reported that the bunnies have multiplied so rapidly that they have become a great nuisance.”
75 years ago: “A group of safe crackers obtained a total of about $400 in cash in two hauls made at Ignacio. Using a heavy jimmy of some kind to pry open the locks on the doors, the robbers entered both Morrison General Store and the Ignacio Post Office.”
50 years ago: “Checks were beginning to come in for the Friends of Jean Broomell fund at the public library. The purpose of the money-raising is to furbish a children’s room in the proposed new $175,000 library expansion program and name it for Mrs. Broomell.” Broomell was largely responsible for the creation of elementary school libraries in the Durango school district.
25 years ago: “A proposed factory outlet shopping center at 14th Street and Main Avenue is back on track after design approval. The city Design Review Board voted unanimously to approve the wood, glass and brick remodel of the old City Market building following concessions presented by developer Southwest Associates and architect George King. The board, which turned down the earlier Old West design for the building, commended the developers for their efforts to meet city design guidelines prohibiting theme designs that might be confused with historic buildings.”
