And the West is History

“Performers and celebrities at the second Cowboy Poetry Gathering and the third annual Western Arts and Film Festival, held in October of 1990, were treated to a trail ride and dinner by Rapp Guide Service. Actor Barry Corbin adjusts his saddle before the ride.”

100 years ago: “Newt Barton, delivery man for the Otis-McGirr Mercantile Company, was out with the aid of a cane for the first time in a couple of weeks since he tried to lift his team and wagon out of a hole and sprained his back. Newt says he could easily have lifted either the team or the wagon separately, but that he was in a hurry and tried to lift them all at once.”

75 years ago: “Christmas decorations on Main Avenue are coming down and the merry yuletide is officially over.”

50 years ago: The Kiva Theatre was showing “Return from the Ashes.” The billing read: “No one may enter the theatre after Fabi enters her bath!”

25 years ago: “As the new year begins, endangered fish still have the massive Animas-La Plata Water Project snagged on a hook. Project proponents are hopeful a plan to recover two threatened fish species will prompt a go-ahead from biologists, enabling a May construction start – one year late.”
