And the West is History

100 years ago: “Graden Co. will close all day tomorrow. It has a stack of turkeys, geese, ducks and chickens in their market, to say nothing of beef, pork, mutton and delicatessen-cured meats. Do your shopping early as it is not pleasant to deliver goods in the mud.”

75 years ago: A classified advertisement read: “Lost – One red sow, crippled left hind leg. Notify Port of Entry Cedar Hill. Reward.”

50 years ago: Durango – “Are you surprised that the post office flag remains at half-mast during the night? Postmaster Schuyler C. Parker says the one time a flag may be flown at night is during periods of national mourning when the flag is floodlighted. The 30-day period of national mourning will end Dec. 21.”

25 years ago: “Local businessman Jim Jackson made a prediction that Durango would become a shopping resort when the Polo factory store opened three months ago. Jackson’s theory could be coming true – another nationally known clothing business is opening a factory store in Rio Grande Land, one block from the Polo outlet. Benetton, one of the largest clothing retailers in the world, plans to open a factory store.”
