100 Years Ago: Nell Nelson and Mary O’Rourke were hostesses at a “five hundred party” in honor of Miss Ruth Jackson and her guest, Miss Ruth Hartman of Aztec. The theme was Valentine’s Day, with decorations of Cupid “and his staff” appearing everywhere.

75 years ago: Sickness struck Durango, leaving “many of the children out with colds and flu.” Of mention was Ernest Engler, who had been out of school for five weeks ill with flu.

50 Years Ago: La Plata Fire volunteers extinguished a fire at the Bob Balliger residence near Junction Creek. Approximately $400 in damage resulted from the blaze, confined to the ceiling and attic. It was caused from an overheated stove pipe.

25 years ago: An 18-year-old man was cited for shoplifting in Southwest Sound, 922 Main Ave., after attempting to steal a “Beauty and the Beast” compact disc, valued $15.
