And the West is History

100 years ago: “In settling up the Robert Roberts estate the Hotel Savoy property here was sold under a court order for $15,000 to Mrs. Roberts and Mrs. Anna Jones, a niece of Mr. Roberts.”

75 years ago: “Just to convince ‘em that they will insure any car, the Turner Security’s Company has parked on the curb in front of their offices a 1911 Krit. Most people are unaware that a care named ‘Krit’ was ever manufactured, but the mechanical evidence is present to prove that there was. The car, belonging to Lou Horton of Animas City, is not exactly beautiful, but its interesting to see.”

50 years ago: “Jim Hatfield, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Hatfield and Durango track star had his picture in Sunday’s Rocky Mountain News and Monday’s Denver Post on the sports pages. If people in Northwestern Colorado don’t know about Durango, it isn’t because Durangoans do not get their pictures in the metropolitan papers.”

25 years ago: “Ignacio High School took first place honors and $500 in the ‘Don’t Be a Stiff’ high school seat-belt use and safe-driving competition. The award was presented before tip-off at a game of the Denver Nuggets. ... The 15-minute video, entitled ‘Unfair Advantage,’ features the ‘Grim Reaper’ who leads students to join an intoxicated peer in a care ride. The ‘Grim Reaper’ wins when a car crash takes the lives of two of the teens in the car and badly injures others in the car.”
