100 years ago: “Yesterday was a real scorcher. The sun beat down good and hot. More beautiful weather even in the San Juan Basin is hard to find.”
75 years ago: “The first peacetime draft lottery in the history of the U.S. began in Washington, and the first two numbers drawn touched two La Plata County men. Number 1 – the first number drawn – was 158 and that number was held in La Plata County by Wilho John Matis of Durango. Number 2 – the second number drawn – was 192 and was held by George Byron Greenice of Bayfield. The fact that their numbers were drawn first and second does not necessarily mean that they will be the first drafted. It means only that they will be the first to appear before the draft board for classification.”
50 years ago: The following appeared in the section, “Girl About Town”: “Most embarrassed is Coach Bannie Bowman who broke his nose while showing the Powder Puff football team how to tackle.”
