100 years ago: “A report of a serious forest fire three miles south of Elk Park was received where an entire mountain side of heavy spruce timber is burning. ... The danger from fire has seldom been greater than at the present time. The forests are dry and the slightest spark is liable to start a most destructive blaze. Sparks from a D.&R.G. engine started the blaze reported near Elk Park.”
75 years ago: “The annual turkey dinner of St. Columba’s Catholic Church was reported a success, with more than 525 people being served, and the beano tables crowded all evening.”
50 years ago: “Captain John Smith, well-known piano player in Durango, as he has played at the Diamond Belle and the Full House, was pictured in the Rocky Mountain News entertainment section. He is currently playing at the Red Slipper in Cherry Creek in Denver.”
25 years ago: The Gaslight Twin, 102 Fifth St., was showing Stephen King’s “Graveyard Shift.” The billing read, “Stephen King took you to the edge with ‘The Shining’ and ‘Pet Sematary.’ This time ... he pushes you over.”
