100 years ago: Predictions were made for the Silverton camp. It was expected to establish record ore shipments for January.

75 years ago: Buildings near the Pride of the West mine near Silverton caught fire, creating “one of the worst disasters in San Juan mining history.” Eight men working in the mine were suffocated by fumes and smoke.

50 Years Ago: A fire destroyed a house nine miles east of Bayfield. Damages were an estimated $13,000, and the homeowner Don McKee needed to find a new housing situation.

25 years ago: An intoxicated 41-year-old man was taken to jail for cruelty to animals after allegedly killing a dog with a knife. He was also in violation of bond conditions, and stole a check from someone and used it to purchase alcohol.
