100 years ago: “Fred Kroeger came to Durango from the Animas Valley to see Dr. Dowis and get treatment for his eye, in which a piece of steel had taken up an abiding place. The chip of metal came from a sickle which he had been grinding. Relief was obtained.”
75 years ago: “Noel Thompson, the far-driving Alamosa lad, was again the winner of the Spanish Trails Golf Tournament held at the Durango Hillcrest course, successfully defending the title he gained in last year’s tourney.”
50 years ago: “The Spanish Trails Fiesta rodeo, already one of the biggest open rodeos in the country, is expected to be bigger than ever. ... Bud Reynolds, arena director for the rodeo, told the Fiesta committee ‘It looks like we will have cowboys running out our ears’ as several inquiries have already been received from potential contestants in Arizona and Oklahoma as well as Colorado.”
25 years ago: “Welcome relief from hot, dry weather arrived in the Durango area over the weekend. But drought conditions persist. The area received 0.35 of an inch of precipitation between Saturday morning and Sunday morning and 0.11 of an inch from Sunday morning through Monday morning.
