100 years ago: Food production efforts “developed some enthusiastic feminine agriculturists” in Durango. One woman, who was “strongly in favor of protection, advocated “planting moth balls with cucumbers and strychnine with corn in order to keep subterranean pirates from dining on the seeds.”
75 years ago: A display of photographs that featured La Plata County men in the armed forces was in the window of The Durango News, which attracted “every citizen walking Main Avenue.”
50 years ago: Donna L. Sanderson and her two small children were injured in a car crash that occurred shortly after she ripped the steering gear of the 1949 Ford two-door sedan clean off the frame. The three were hospitalized at Mercy upon being found in the car, which rolled off the road into a ditch.
25 years ago: Combination coffee retailer and photo gallery, Espresso Durango opened at the corner of Sixth Street and Main Avenue. It sold gourmet coffee drinks and photographs taken by local artists.
