And the West is History

100 years ago: SILVERTON – “Walking into the Jackomelly Saloon with drawn revolver, Bill Doggee, an Italian miner, shot Louie Heckovich, the bartender, in the mouth without warning, shot two other Italians, each through the hand, and was himself shot in the back of the head before being disarmed and overpowered. ... What caused the shooting has not yet been learned.”

75 years ago: “With its water supply shut off since Monday, Bayfield is in a predicament which threatens to become serious. The reservoir, which supplies the town’s water ran dry after the ditch which leads into the reservoir from the Pine River froze solid and prevented the flow of more water into the reservoir. Because of the lack of water, Bayfield schools have been shut down.”

50 years ago: “Veteran amateur weather expert W.W. Davies pointed out what increasing numbers of residents are coming to believe: ‘It’s been quite a while since we’ve had a winter like this!’ ‘There was no snow at all during the winter of ’03-’04,’ he said. ‘Not even in the mountains. Farmers were greatly troubled and some didn’t even bother to plant the following spring, but rains came in July just like last year. Those who’d taken the risk won out.’”

25 years ago: “The town of Ignacio was awarded a $5,000 grant in technical assistance to start planning a way to enhance the town’s entryways. The grant is part of the Colorado Initiatives Program. ... Ignacio is already well into its Streetscape Project, a beautification plan for the town’s main street that will use planters, decorative lampposts and storefront remodeling to enhance the town’s look.”
