100 years ago: Ignacio – “There are new buildings being created in our city. Guess the Gate Way to Cave Basin is holding its own.”

75 years ago: “The large brush fire burning near Hesperus since early this week is now under control, although a gang of CCC boys still remain as guards. The fire lies about a mile west of Hesperus and a mile south over the mountain.”

50 years ago: “Every $5 purchase on Durango’s Silver Dollar Day may receive a silver dollar in change if the buyer asks for the cartwheel. ... Some of the dollars will be new, uncirculated ones with the date of Durango’s incorporation, 1881.”

25 years ago: “Overcrowding in the 9-R School District’s kindergarten classrooms has some parents concerned that their children aren’t getting a quality education. Board members received copies of a petition that was signed by about 100 parents. The petition calls for smaller classrooms.”
