“When you can’t find a live groundhog on Ground Hog day you just have to settle for what’s available, as these Fort Lewis students are doing. The old saying is that if a groundhog sees his shadow when he emerges Feb. 2, there will be six weeks of bad weather. The students borrowed the groundhog from the college’s zoology department.”

100 years ago: “Charles Godfrey, who has been in the hospital several days as a result of a splinter flying into his eye, was out, with indications of no permanent injury to result form the accident.”

75 years ago: “The La Plata Motors report the following new car sales: A V-8 pick-up delivered to John Pegani of Allison; and a V-8 pick-up sold to Theo Cundiff of Ignacio.”

50 years ago: “City cigarette tax collection for the first two months of 1964 is almost $1,000 less than the amount collected for the same two months in 1963. It’s down 21 percent. Cigarette tax revenue to the city for 1964 stands at $3,680.10. Last year the first two months produced $4,668.30.”

25 years ago: “It was a rubber game, and the Bobcats bounced the Wolverines. Chris Herrera scored 22 points and Sheldon Frost added 21 as the Ignacio High School boys’ basketball team topped Bayfield High School 54-49 in the finals of the 1A District 6 Tournament at Durango High School. ... It is the third-straight season the ‘Cats have qualified for the state championships.”
