And the West is History

100 years ago: “Sheriff Robert Pearson, of Silverton, came down from the San Juan County seat on his way to Farmington to get rid of a bad cold and to visit for a few days with Jim Clifford, who is taking the air in the hot country.”

75 years ago: “For unusual thrills and nerve-tingling suspense, few motion pictures can compare with ‘Swiss Family Robinson,’ which plays at the Kiva theater.”

50 years ago: “A load of pipe Leroy C. Butler, 32 of Casper, Wyo., was hauling on a semi came loose and slid through the truck cab, but Butler received only a cut on his right elbow. Butler was driving his truck downgrade on the east side of Hesperus hill seven miles west of Durango, when the truck lost its brakes. He headed the truck into a snowbank.”

25 years ago: “Parents gave the nod to Bayfield School Superintendent Ed Schelhaas to go ahead with a four-period class day in the high school. Beginning next fall, high school students will be taking only four classes each day compared to the seven they have now.”
