100 years ago: “A serious forest fire in the Durango national forest of Little Elk Creek has been burning for three days and the destruction of a great amount of valuable timber is certain. The fire is one of the most serious that the forest service has had to combat in this section this year.”
75 years ago: “Folk songs, chiefly spirituals and jubilee songs, formed the basis of the program presented by the Mississippians, a negro quartet which appeared at Smiley. The quartet excelled in harmonizing and their group efforts were better appreciated than their individual presentations, spoken or sung.”
50 years ago: “Neither the lost plane carrying four men from Gunnison, nor two hunters lost in the Mancos area have been found. Thirty aircraft from Colorado, New Mexico and Utah are in the air looking for the light plane piloted by Vince Noice and carrying assistant Western State College football line coaches Bob Busia and Garth Yorkton and assistant backfield coach John Novak.”
