75 years ago: “Among the members of the 1938 graduating class of nurses at the Denver Mercy Hospital were six girls from Durango and the San Juan Basin who spent 18 months at the Durango Mercy Hospital as part of their course of study. Included were Virginia La Londe, Opal Jenkins and Ruby Holt of Durango.”
50 years ago: “Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Manuel, who have operated the Rochester Hotel on Second Avenue for the past two years, have leased the Savoy Hotel in Rio Grande-land and have renamed it Hotel Silverton. The Manuels plan to redecorate the lobby, and completely clean the hotel. Old-fashioned signs will add interest to the 33-room hotel.”
25 years ago: SILVERTON – “The ongoing saga of the Sunnyside Mine took a new twist as its owner, Echo Bay Mine, announced a joint venture project which will bring in a new company to operate the often-troubled property. The agreement gives Silver King Mines Inc. and Pacific Silver Corp., both of Salt Lake City, a shared 60 percent interest in the Sunnyside.”
