100 years ago: “The biggest attraction in the mining field just now is the discovery of radioactive ore fields in the territory along Montezuma Creek in the western part of Montezuma County and extending over into Utah. Radium is one of the very rare and very valuable metals and this discovery may prove to be one of the great attractions in the San Juan country.”
75 years ago: An advertisement for Durango Chick Hatchery, 17th and Main, read: “Baby chicks and custom hatching. Chicks from blood-tested flocks, lots of 100 or more, per 100 – $9; turkey eggs hatched each 5 cents; chicken eggs hatched each 3 cents.”
50 years ago: “La Plata Fire Volunteers and Durango city firemen had a busy day putting out fires, mostly brush fires, in rural areas and in the city.”
25 years ago: “A prominent Durango businessman crushed both feet when the home-built Hyperlight plane he was piloting nose-dived 50 feet into a hayfield. ... He built the 245-pound ultralight plane from a kit in 1985 and flew around the area as a hobby.”
