50 years ago: The Fort Lewis College Raider Marching Band has been selected to perform the halftime entertainment for the Denver Broncos-Kansas City professional football game on Sunday, Oct. 23, in Denver. For the halftime show, which will be regionally televised, the Raiders will present precision drills to music reminiscent of the Old West and the Southwest, including such numbers as “How the West Was Won” and “Wagon Wheels.”
25 years ago: The fate of the La Plata County Fairgrounds hangs in the balance as voters head to the polls Tuesday to decide if the facility should stay at its current site or be moved. If the $3.4 million bond issue is approved, the fairgrounds will stay at its 30-acre site in the heart of Durango and structural problems and additional repairs will be addressed. If the bond issue fails, the county commissioners have said they will sell the existing fairgrounds and use the proceeds to purchase 150 acres on Ewing Mesa and construct a new fairgrounds.
