100 years ago: “Local grocers report a slightly less amount of preserves and fruit being put up by the local housewives on account of the high price of sugar. Many of the women are reported to be putting up their fruit without sugar, figuring on sweetening the preservers when sugar comes down a little.”
75 years ago: “What a relief: Sugar and flour have dropped nearly back to the normal price. Now we won’t have to stir our coffee so thoroughly or save table crumbs instead of throwing them to the birds. In the last war we developed a liking for corn meal products, but that was because we didn’t realize that we had to or else.”
50 years ago: This appeared in the section called: Girl About Town: “Purely Gossip: Who was the non-drinking school teacher who, on a recent trip to Albuquerque, was thought to be smashed by a passer-by who found her standing on a street corner yelling ‘Shotsie’? The local explanation is that she was calling a dog who had escaped her owners.”
25 years ago: “Parking from Durango High School has spilled over next door to the La Plata County Fairgrounds, and fairgrounds personnel aren’t so sure they like the duties that go with it. ‘The kids go through the hallway at noon. Sometimes we have to turn them in for skipping class,’ said Julie Biemond, fairgrounds secretary.”
