100 years ago: “According to the school census report just compiled, La Plata County had 3,690 persons between the ages of 6 to 21. Of these, 1,857 are males and 1,833 females. ... In the county, there are four deaf mutes, one female and three males.”
75 years ago: “Robert Ford of the state game farm near Colorado Springs will be in Durango to inspect locations in the basin relative to their desirability for stocking with pheasants. The local game and fish organization has asked that a pheasant planting and rearing program be instituted in the basin.”
50 years ago: “It is contemplated that as many as 200 deer from the resident herd of Mesa Verde National Park will be live-trapped next winter. ... In a recent letter to Harry R. Woodward, director of the Colorado Game, Fish and Parks Department, Chester A. Thomas, superintendent of Mesa Verde National Park, said that a newspaper report to the effect that the excess deer in Mesa Verde National Park would be killed was inaccurate and premature.”
25 years ago: “McDonald’s new McLean Deluxe hamburger, now available in Durango, really is healthier for you, according to the Colorado State University Extension Service. ‘The new Deluxe hamburger contains just 9 percent fat. That’s a substantial improvement from the standard 20 percent fat hamburger,’ said Jennifer Anderson, human nutrition specialist for the extension service.”
