And the West is History

Sunnyside Elementary School fifth- and sixth-grade students show off rockets the students made in Eugene Keen’s class in this May 10, 1988, picture.

100 years ago: “As fall weather, the present supply being dished out by the weather man cannot be beaten. Warm, pleasant days, with nights not too cool – just enough to be exhilarating – we can lay just claim to having THE climate.”

75 years ago: “Thursday morning the county-wide ban on public gatherings will be lifted, Dr. Leo W. Lloyd, county physician, said, ending a two-weeks period of partial quarantine. The ban was ordered following an outbreak of infantile paralysis in La Plata County.”

50 years ago: Gem Village – “Many of the Villagers are still recuperating from colds, flu, and other illnesses that seem to come with fall. Our best wishes are extended to all on the ‘sick list.’”

25 years ago: “Durango-area doctors have filed suit in District Court to block the lease of the tax-supported La Plata Community Hospital to a private, for-profit company. The 70-member La Plata Medical Society is seeking a restraining order, a temporary injunction and a permanent injunction from 6th Judicial District Court Judge Al Haas. The doctors claim the lease ‘will have profound, adverse, long-term effects on the delivery of health care in the region.’”
