And the West is History

This picture appeared in The Durango Herald on March 14, 1963. The cutline read: “Excavation is again progressing on the basement for the jail addition being built to the La Plata County Courthouse. The addition is along the alley back of the south end of the second addition of the courthouse building.”

100 years ago: “Tom Goulding hiked for Flora Vista, forsaking the cares of his sheep camp for a short spell.”

75 years ago: “The Republicans of La Plata County met in regularly called assembly. By the appointed hour at least 200 delegates and alternates were present. It was the best attended political assembly held by any political party in Durango, within memory of any of those present.”

50 years ago: “A wad from a blank cartridge, which was accidentally discharged during a session of ‘Kangaroo Court’ struck Vic Tucker, wounding his hand. Tucker, a member of the Colorado Mounted Rangers who are conducting the Kangaroo Court, suffered a burn and laceration and received emergency treatment. The incident occurred in front of the Woolworth’s store.”

25 years ago: “Patrick L.K. Williams, 13, puts most adults to shame. The Smiley Junior High School student in August will publish his fifth newspaper. Yes, his fifth, complete with advertising. Williams, son of Tim and Dianne Williams of Durango, previously put together four editions of the 4-Her Today as 4-H junior leadership projects. The first three were mimeographed; the fourth was printed by the Durango Herald – and turned a profit.”
