A firefighter runs a hose through the window of the Durango & Silverton Railroad roundhouse as flames leap from a section of the building. The brick portion of the roundhouse, built in 1881, was extensively damaged in the fire, which gutted the entire building in February 1989.

100 years ago: “Fifty teams and 75 men worked all day on the eight miles of road between Ignacio and Bayfield. ... The road workers propose next to take up the road from Bayfield to the Columbia bridge. The road work probably will be extended to the site of the Vallecito bridge.”

75 years ago: “Durango’s municipal band, directed by Prof. E. T. Sly will present its last indoor concert of the season. ... Weekly outdoor concerts during the summer are being planned by the band with the first one Easter Sunday afternoon.”

50 years ago: SILVERTON – “Jake Morlang, 30, was killed by a dynamite charge in the American Tunnel of the Standard Metals property above Silverton.”

25 years ago: “The chief executive officer of La Plata Community Hospital called a press conference to announce a profit of $26,504 in February. It was the second month in a row that the hospital has logged a revenue increase.”
